How did you ask Google to visit and categorize your web site?

Creating a successful website for a business requires three critical items:

Search Engine Optimized Web Site
+
Initial and Continual Web Site Promotion to Major Search Engines
+
Automated Follow Up Program for Prospect Conversion

Unfortunately most business owners miss at least one if not two of these areas involving their web site.

One of the biggest areas is the failure to properly notify the major search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo that your web site exists and also when it is updated or changes.

Early Web Site Submission Process:
Years ago professional web marketing companies would record each page or “URL” of a web site and then submit it for consideration or inclusion to each of the major search engines. The search engines would then send their “robot spider” out to crawl and categorize the website.  Each search engine has different requirements for submission and limits for the maximum number of pages that can be submitted per day. There was software that could automate the submission task, but it is generally too expensive to be justified by an individual business owner.  More recently programs like these have stopped selling their submission software because the major search engines have made it clear that although they may still accept individual submissions of web sites and pages, they place a very low priority on when they will index or crawl the submitted site.

The answer:  XML Sitemaps
Today major search engines, like Google, recommend that website owners create a separate HTML formatted file called a Site Map. The file contains information formatted to specifically allow the search engines to easily read and record all the pages in the web site.  Some web site platforms like WordPress, Joomla and Drupal have plugins or “add ons” that can automate the process of creating these files. They can inform the major search engines when the initial file is created for the web site and also whenever the content pages are changed and added. This is one of the reasons that web sites written with this type of automated search engine automation can rank higher than older static HTML formatted web sites, when all other things SEO areas are equal.

Options for older HTML Static sites:
For older web sites that cannot use one of the automated plug-ins can still create sitemaps using online or downloaded software designed to crawl the website and create a Sitemap file. Several of these programs are free for download and use up to a limited number of pages, but most have an option to upgrade for a small fee. The best method for finding the latest list is clicking on the following link or typing the following search in Google.com :  XML sitemap

Do I have a Sitemap?
In some of cases web hosting companies create a sitemap as part of their web site hosting process. If you want to check to see if your website has an XML Sitemap the easiest way is to type in the URL address bar of your browser:  http://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

If the sitemap exists it generally looks something like this image but can appear differently depending on the program that created it.  Internet Marketing Sitemap.XML Example

In short it is incredibly important for every business owner to be aware of website sitemaps, how they affect web site search ranking and how to determine if they have one.  The search engines will find out about your web site even without a sitemap eventually, but with the enormous number of new websites coming into the internet every day the time be indexed and ranked without one is increasing. The most pretty business web site in the internet does not benefit the business if the search engines, and therefore the consumers, do not know it exists…

Internet Marketing Website SEO Checklist for Business Owners

SEO Secrets Checklist for Business Owners

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive from business owners involves how to get their web site to show up on the front page of Google.   In a lot of cases the person asking this question is an owner or branch manager and not a technical web designer. They are usually  working with a contractor or in some cases an internal employee or maybe a family member to help create their web site.

In a lot of cases their web site is very professional and looks great, but just is not ranking well because it is not “formatted” in the proper way for the top search engines, like Google, Bing and Yahoo to read and “index”,or list it for the type of products or services that the business provides in the geographic area that the business or brand focuses on in the local market.

To help answer this question we have created a One Page Website SEO Checklist for Business Owners listing the top areas to pay attention to when creating or redesigning any web site for better ranking in Google, Yahoo or Bing. These items are not platform specific and it does not matter what software or template program is used as long as the web page areas of concern can be modified. We have used these methods with small sites in local markets to very large sites that needed to rank on the front page of national markets.

Click the title of each item or the “read more” button for further explanation and in most cases a short video example.

Top SEO Internet Marketing Secret Tip #1 for Business Owners

The first top professional SEO technique is to make sure that the primary key word phrase is part of the website domain name. One of the main methods that internet search engines, including Google, use to identify and index web site keywords is the domain name.

Tampa Internet Marketing Google SEO Tip 4

Things to avoid

Don’t fill your page with lists of keywords, attempt to “cloak” pages, or put up “crawler only” pages. If your site contains pages, links, or text that you don’t intend visitors to see, Google considers those links and pages deceptive and may ignore your site.

Don’t feel obligated to purchase a search engine optimization service. Some companies claim to “guarantee” high ranking for your site in Google’s search results. While legitimate consulting firms can improve your site’s flow and content, others employ deceptive tactics in an attempt to fool search engines. Be careful; if your domain is affiliated with one of these deceptive services, it could be banned from our index.

Don’t use images to display important names, content, or links. Google crawler doesn’t recognize text contained in graphics. Use ALT attributes if the main content and keywords on your page can’t be formatted in regular HTML.

Don’t create multiple copies of a page under different URLs. Many sites offer text-only or printer-friendly versions of pages that contain the same content as the corresponding graphic-rich pages. If your site has identical content that can be reached via different URLs, there are several ways of indicating the canonical (preferred) version of a page. More information about canonicalization.

Tampa Internet Marketing Google SEO Tip #3

Make your site easily accessible

Build your site with a logical link structure. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.

Use a text browser, such as Lynx, to examine your site. Most spiders see your site much as Lynx would. If features such as JavaScript, cookies, session IDs, frames, DHTML, or Macromedia Flash keep you from seeing your entire site in a text browser, then spiders may have trouble crawling it.

Tampa Internet Marketing Google SEO Tip 2

Make sure that other sites link to yours

Links help Google crawlers find your site and can give your site greater visibility in Google search results. When returning results for a search, Google uses sophisticated text-matching techniques to display pages that are both important and relevant to each search. Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote by page A for page B. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.”

Keep in mind that Google algorithms can distinguish natural links from unnatural links. Natural links to your site develop as part of the dynamic nature of the web when other sites find your content valuable and think it would be helpful for their visitors. Unnatural links to your site are placed there specifically to make your site look more popular to search engines. Some of these types of links (such as link schemes and doorway pages) are covered in Google Webmaster Guidelines.

Only natural links are useful for the indexing and ranking of your site.

Tampa Internet Marketing Google SEO Tip 1

Give visitors the information they’re looking for

Provide high-quality content on your pages, especially your homepage. This is the single most important thing to do. If your pages contain useful information, their content will attract many visitors and entice webmasters to link to your site. In creating a helpful, information-rich site, write pages that clearly and accurately describe your topic. Think about the words users would type to find your pages and include those words on your site.

Local Businesses Find Social Media as Most Effective Marketing Channel- Small Business News

Local Businesses Find Social Media as Most Effective Marketing Channel – Small Business News

Social media even beats out paid search.  Even though small businesses have found social media to be effective, one of the early setbacks with it was time. Social media is all about relationships, which can take a lot of time. This was difficult for businesses to grasp since they were used to speedy and scalable results from paid search.

However, a study just released from Roost, a social marketing platform for small businesses, found that more than 71.4 percent of small businesses surveyed believe social media is more effective than paid search. Interestingly, only 15 percent of those surveyed found paid search as their most effective means of marketing.

What’s even more interesting is that 84.1 percent of local businesses found Facebook, specifically, to be the most effective channel. LinkedIn was second with 8.3 percent followed by Twitter with 7.6 percent.

The survey also revealed that only 0.5 percent of the respondents did not find marketing with social media to be effective at all.

While we know that economic issues helped to spur the popularity of social marketing, the survey further proved this theory since 46.1 percent of respondents said they use social media because it “saves me money.” The next most popular reason for using social media for marketing was that “it’s a fun way to interact with people,” with 45 percent checking this option. A very close third reason, with 44.8 percent of the votes, said social media “keeps me top of mind” with consumers.

The biggest problem that businesses had with social media was measuring it, with 45.1 percent saying it was their greatest challenge. Not knowing what content to push out through social media was also a challenge for small businesses, getting 38.5 percent of the votes.

So, how does this survey impact you? The biggest takeaway is that you need to be involved in social media, if you’re not already. It’s valuable, and it’s not going away. The channels might change, but consumers are now accustomed to being in control over brands.

Like the study indicated, social media takes time and has its challenges, but it’s very effective if you do it right. Are you tapping this market of opportunity?

How Much Text Content Does Google Recommend on Home Pages?

How Much Text Content Does Google Recommend on Home Pages?
Google recommends having content on the home page along with captions for images for Googlebot to find,. But Google does not recommend having too much content on the home page, such as several mega bytes.
